I am sorry to hear that your friend is not well. I cannot give you any info as to exactly what treatment he is going to have. It will be probably chemotherapy. The good news is that the chance of being cured from AML is quite high. You can find more info here:

Be there for him when he will need you. I don't know how close you 2 are so it is diffficult for me to be more precise. If you find it difficult emotionally and would prefer to talk to somebody face to face, please talk to the nurses in hospital. They will be able to offer you some help.
